Application for Handgun License Instructions
Application for handgun license will be submitted online only.
Applicants must go to the Indiana State Police website, click on the “Firearms Licensing” tab that is located on the left side of the page. Then click on “Apply for a New License to Carry” tab. Once you are directed to the “Apply for a New License to Carry” page follow steps 1 through 3.
Step 1: Complete a Handgun License Application online at the Indiana State Police Handgun Licensing Portal.
Step 2: Schedule an appointment to submit your fingerprints electronically at a location convenient to you. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your local law enforcement agency.
- As you submit the application you will be asked to make an appointment online with an L-1 contractor to have your fingerprints taken. An appointment must be made by clicking the online box. The local L-1 contractor is the Daviess County Chamber of Commerce, 1 Train Depot St., Washington, IN 47501. No walk-ins will be accepted at the Daviess County Chamber of Commerce. The cost of fingerprinting is $11.95. The “State of Indiana Firearms License Fees” shall be paid to the L-1 contractor by check or money order at the time of your appointment.
- After completing the online application print out the confirmation page.
Step 3: Complete local law enforcement (sheriff or municipal police) agency processing within 90 days.
- After printing out the confirmation page, paying your “State Fees” and being fingerprinted at the local L-1 Contractor you must go to the Washington Police Department. At the police department you must provide your Indiana Driver’s License or an alternate form of identification in combination with a recent photo. You must also provide a money order or cash payment in the exact amount of the “Local Fees” as stated on your application confirmation page.
- Either the Chief of Police or a designee of the Chief of Police will review your completed application. A receipt will be issued to you for payment of the “Local Fees.”
